Nash Lodge - Kitchen & Landscaping

It's the kitchen's turn. Last year Nash Lodge over went a hefty makeover. This year, the back of the house has it's turn. By next spring Don will have a new walk-in cooler and freezer, a new dishwasher, and a better floor plan to the kitchen.

Above: Main door to the kitchen/loading dock. The area will be expanded for a larger walk-in cooler and freezer with outside access and loading dock. Below: A back entrance and porch will be added to the kitchen. This will be to re-create the porch that used to be here, and to have easier access for trash and recycling facilities.

After the construction on the dining hall was finished last spring, we left the landscaping to take a beating - on purpose. We wanted to see which way the water would go and where people would be walking. After a pilot summer of sand and washouts, the landscapers are here and hard at work putting in steps.

Above: New stone steps are built to reflect the original stone steps.

The stonework is the first 'step' in the landscaping process. Work will continue in the spring. Kitchen renovation will continue throughout the winter.

Rehires

Rehire forms were sent out via email yesterday to staff that worked at Camp in the last three years who are eligible for future employment. If you haven't received one it might be that we don't have your current email address.

We look forward to hearing from you. Next summer is just around the corner.

Introducing Matt Leibfried

We would like to introduce Matt Leibfried(pictured below jumping into arctic river) as one of the Staff Recruiting Coordinators. Matt will start in November and work with the program team on staff recruiting and logistics for the Outpost Program.
For those of you who don't know Matt, he has worked at Manito-wish since 2003. He has been a counselor, Western leader(x2) and Expo Backpacking leader(2x). He has significant field experience at various wilderness therapy programs. He will be an instructor for a 21 day wilderness therapy program immediately prior to driving up to Camp for the winter.

We look forward to having Matt up here and being able to jump right into things.
Matt, Jay, Brandt, Mark and Drew are still looking for one more person to fill the Staff Recruiting Coordinator position from January to May. All that are interested should contact Drew for more information.

New bike trail to connect Camp to paved trail system

The Boulder Junction Bike Trial Committee recently received a grant from the Department of Transportation to extend the paved bike trial system in town. The planned trial will extend from downtown Boulder Junction and go to Camp's main entrance, as well as go north on Hwy M to Dairyman's road.

I've been on the bike trial committee beginning last fall and am excited to see this extension serve Camp. Especially for staff and spring and fall groups that bike, jog, and walk to town along the Hwy.

Follow this link to see the entire story from Lakeland Times (and a great shot of your truly):

Womens Weekend & Father Son Weekend

The third weekend in September is always Womens Weekend at Camp. The fourth weekend is always Father Son Weekend at Camp. I just wanted to put up a quick post letting you all know how much fun we had the past two weekends at Camp.

We paddled, had campfires, went biking, painted, shot trap, and sang more camp songs than should be allowed.

Special thanks to Mo, Denise, and Carla Hacker for their work with Womens Weekend. And to Chris Wright, Kate Abraham, and McKenna for their work with Father Son Weekend.

There have been a lot more programs here as well, and more to come! Including UW Whitewater, UW Stevens Point, Ripon College, and Northland College. The Northfield School of Arts & Technology, Prairie School, University Lake School, Brookfield East High School and more.

If you haven't been up here in the fall - come on up. The colors are amazing.

Now Hiring: Staff Recriutment Coordinators

We hire a lot of staff. Over 250 seasonal staff every year. We sent out over 350 rehires and interview over 150 new applicants every year.

Each new application takes 3 or more hours to process per person. This is reviewing the application and three references, setting up and conducting an interview, calling all references for follow-up information, and negotiating job offers.

We also go and visit colleges across the Midwest. We hang out with clubs and organizations, facilitate in classrooms, and set up special recruiting events.

We need your help!

We are looking for two hard working motivated, social, go-getters who love to work with people. You need to love living in a winter recreation wonderland, traveling to colleges, and working at Camp.

Gain experience that will get your foot in the door at in admin positions at other Camps nationwide. Housing is provided, free meal service when available, on site training, and more.

Want to know more? Contact us (more specifically Drew) for a full job description. We are looking to fill two positions - one to begin in November, one to begin in January. Both positions are to work to May 1st and ideally transition in to a summer job at Camp. This is a paid position and ideal for those pursuing the outdoor recreation field.

This could be you.

Rehires and Applications

Rehires will be going out via email on Wednesday, October 15. New applicants will be able to apply online the same day as well. A rehire (for those that don't know) is an invitation sent to current seasonal staff to apply to work at Camp for the following season. You will not need to fill out a new applicant application! Just a rehire form.

If you do not receive a rehire it may be for reasons as simple as us not having your email address. Please contact Drew, Jay, Mark or myself and we can work with you from there.

Hiring for the 2009 season begins as early as November 1, 2008. Make sure we have your current email address so we can get a hold of you.
